Jazz, drinks and hip-hop – The Gig Cocktail Bar brings some casual cool to The Valley

Anyone that has been out and about in Fortitude Valley on a Friday or Saturday night knows that I can be a little bit overwhelming. A brand new bar has quietly opened on Wickham Street, offering a cool and casual respite from the craziness of Brunswick Street. The Gig Cocktail Bar pairs classic cocktails and Japanese whisky with good music, smooth jazz and a comfortable atmosphere removed from the dizzying revelry of the Entertainment District.

If you like to keep tabs on the happenings in Fortitude Valley’s bar scene, then you’ve probably already noticed a new haunt has opened its doors next to Super Bowl. This jazzy joint is The Gig Cocktail Bar, which softly opened its doors this month. Owned and operated by hospitality newcomer Jacky Shaode Cao, The Gig has settled into the space that once housed steamed bun dispensary Bao Down Now. Jacky has stripped back the space, removing the street-front kitchen, installing a brand new bar, painting over the murals and adding new furnishings to create a casual but cosy atmosphere. Mood lighting helps take the stress off your shoulders, as do the comfortable leather couches that gently support your bones as the woes of the week slide away. Jacky has even imbued the venue with some personal touches, adorning the walls with beloved hip-hop icons and even hanging a signed boxing glove from Muhammad Ali, pre and post name change.

When it comes to libations, The Gig Cocktail Bar’s specialty is, well, cocktails. The potation station is taking an old-school approach to its concoctions, with colourful Grasshoppers and Purple People Eaters whipped up alongside the likes of espresso martinis and Long Island iced teas. Another specialty is The Gig’s selection of top-shelf Japanese whiskies, including Hibiki and Yamazaki, with more drops to be added in the near future. Rounding out the drinkables is a selection of local beers, wines and a selection of liquored coffees for those that need a pick-me-up with a little bit of an edge. The Gig hosts live jazz sessions on Sunday evenings, with DJs bringing the party vibes on Friday and Saturday nights. If Jacky’s posters on the wall are any indication of taste, the tunes will be of the highest quality.
