Camp Hill celebrates the opening of wine maison The Old Seven

There is a long list of reasons to fall in love with France, but we’d have to put its abundance of world-class wines right at the top. Come to think of it, we’d say the same for Spain and Italy too. In fantastic news for local oenophiles, a curated selection of continental European wine (as well as a swag of cheese and smallgoods) is being showcased at Camp Hill’s new wine bar The Old Seven. This charming European-inspired locale opened officially this week, unveiling its selection of worldly wines, fancy fromage and intimate vintage atmosphere.

The details
For Matt and Nellie Lucas, their newly opened intimate wine bar The Old Seven has been seven years in the making. The dream of running their own wine-focussed watering hole stems from a long-held passion for travel and everything that comes with it, especially wine. The enterprising duo – a wine rep and cardiac specialist, respectively – have spent time roaming and researching across Europe, immersing themselves in the vibrant wine-bar culture of France, Italy and Spain. These boozy boltholes formed the inspirational basis for The Old Seven – Matt and Nellie’s own wine bar nestled on Old Cleveland Road in Camp Hill. The site, which formerly housed an art gallery, has been spruced up with a capable DIY overhaul – adding a new green-tiled bar and coffee counter, restored antique furniture, ornately framed artwork and stunning chandeliers. The cosy interior seats 35, while forthcoming street-side dining will add space for another 20 patrons. Also of note – a cellar bar will be built downstairs to provide a charming and intimate function space in the near future.

The food
The Old Seven kicks things off in the morning with a small coffee and snack service, offering up freshly brewed Allpress Coffee and handy grab-and-go eats. Ham-and-cheese croissants, muesli bowls and Turkish toast topped with avocado, Meredith goats chevre, free-range baked ham or haloumi is perfect for lining the stomach pre-commute. As the day progresses into the afternoon and evening, tartines and jaffles become available (drool-worthy four-cheese jaffle with truffle and honey, for example), as well as an array of decadent boards. A menu of four differing boards offer goods sourced from Australia, France, Italy or Spain, plus a build-your-own platter option for patrons eager to mix and match. The Old Seven’s fridge is stuffed with 30 cheeses and an assortment of smallgoods, including epicurean delights such as Mauri taleggio and testun di Barolo from Italy, d’Affinois double-cream brie and assorted saucisson from France, and La Mancha manchego and Serrano jamon from Spain. Cheese and cured meats can be purchased to take away, which is great news for those that love to entertain at home.
The drink
Drawing upon his extensive knowledge working as a wine rep, Matt has been able to put together an impressive and worldly selection of drops for The Old Seven’s menu. The 100-strong assortment boasts varietals from Australia, France, Italy and Spain, with 22 wines available by the glass. Matt and Nellie have been storing away various bottles of wine since before their desire to open a bar even emerged, so drinkers can also expect some choice vintage stock from their personal collection. Non-wine drinkers are also more than welcome at The Old Seven – a small cocktail list, a stockpile of premium spirits, two beers on tap and a selection of tins offer plenty of quaffing material.

The Old Seven is uncorking bottles right now. Get all the extra info you need in the Stumble Guide.
