Trade Coast Hotel embraces a new century with an eye-catching overhaul

Few pubs in Brisbane can boast a history as storied as The Pinkenba Hotel. With a lifespan that goes back more than a century, The Pink has been a tried and true oasis for locals living in or around the coastal suburb. After a period of substantial renovations, The Pink has been transformed, boasting a new look and a new name. Introducing Trade Coast Hotel – a modern and multifaceted watering hole perfectly equipped to carry on the venue's legacy for another hundred years.

When publican Ellen Bain cut the Myrtle Hotel into pieces and transferred it by bullock cart to Pinkenba in 1910, we bet it would have been hard to fathom that the hotel would still be standing more than 100 years later. Aside from getting a letter from the Queen, how does one appropriately celebrate turning 100 or, in this case, 110? The team behind The Pinkenba Hotel decided a sprucing was in order, but we’re not talking about a fresh coat of paint here – think bigger. In anticipation of the launch of the new Brisbane International Cruise Terminal, the hotel has undergone a full rebrand and refurbishment – relaunching on Thursday August 6 as Trade Coast Hotel. The additions include a spiffy new bar, a modern bistro, gaming and TAB facilities, an on-site bottle shop and some three-star accomodation. Trade Coast Hotel’s new aesthetic is crisp and colourful with a splash of history paying homage to the hotel’s beginnings. The Public Bar features a striking light blue and timber palette, accentuated by a large photo wall charting the origins of its founding proprietor Ellen Bain and Pinkenba’s own story as a trade hub and departure point for many of Queensland’s wartime services. Myrtle’s Bistro (named after Pinkenba’s neighbouring suburb Myrtletown) boasts a spacious interior that extends outside to the breezy alfresco beer garden.

With a fresh look comes an overhauled menu – Trade Coast Hotel’s kitchen is now dishing out a swag of pub-style morsels to drool over. The Public Bar’s snack menu is perfect for light grazing with a beer at your elbow, with options like Cajun chicken wings, lemon myrtle and black pepper calamari and juicy steak sandwiches on offer. Those seeking a substantial feed should snag a seat in the bistro – this is where you’ll find a selection of hearty burgers, crispy pizzas (cooked in an eye-catching pizza oven), fresh salads and grilled steaks sharing menu space with the likes of braised lamb shanks with port-wine sauce, creamy gnocchi with mushrooms, beer-battered fish and chips and classic chicken parmigiana. In addition to a range of draught beers (freshly poured from the Public Bar’s gleaming copper taps), wine lovers will also be able to sip on tap wines or a selection of bottled varieties from various Australian and New Zealand wineries. Looking forward, the Trade Coast Hotel team have plans in the works for a second stage of revitalisation, including a new function centre, micro-brewery and four-star accommodation facilities.

Trade Coast Hotel is now open to the public. For contact details and operating hours, head to the Stumble Guide.
