Schoolyard treats make a comeback at Woolloongabba’s Tuckshop Time

Remember the days of the old schoolyard? Pizza rounders, choccie milk, meat pies and Slush Puppies – these were some of the lunchtime staples that made our time at school so memorable. These days our homemade lunches just don’t seem to compare, and although burgers and sweets are easily within our reach, they’re lacking some of the magic of those old-school tuckshop lunches. Tuckshop Time is a new sunny eatery underneath Woolloongabba’s South City Square that is triggering our nostalgia centres with its modern interpretation of schoolyard morsels.

Greg Mclean and Caity Jones know a thing or two about appetising eats. As the owners and operators of Sunshine Coast powerhouse Decisions Cafe, the duo have honed in on an attractive and tasty approach to both healthy and indulgent eats – a theme they’ve explored in their new Brisbane-based outlet Tuckshop Time. One of the first retailers to open up at South City Square’s South Street retail precinct, Tuckshop Time puts a colourful and creative spin on classic schoolyard fare and modern favourites. The kiosk’s façade of pastel blue, pink and white sets a fun scene for curious diners, while a sizeable green space and seating overlooking Deshon Street adds to the leisurely outdoor vibe. Think a playground and tuckshop for kids at heart (with no end-of-recess bell) and you’ve pretty much got it.

Of course, if you call your venue Tuckshop Time you have to back it up with the goods. Greg and Caity aren’t doing things by half measures, installing a vegan and gluten-friendly menu of dine-in and takeaway dishes created by a team of chefs, which are delivered fresh daily. Tuckshop Time is hawking a grown-up version of several tuckshop classics, including pizza rounders and ice-cream (made in house), as well scrumptious extras including waffle bowls, cauliflower-based mac’n’cheese, acai bowls, roast-chicken baguettes, nasi goreng, Moroccan pumpkin salads, Buddha bowls, raw treats and much more. Velvet lattes, coffee, smoothies, juices and kombucha provide the energy kick needed to see the day through, while dogs can also snack on puppy-friendly treats.

In the coming months, Tuckshop Time’s outdoor space will be utilised for play as well as relaxation, with regular outdoor yoga classes, high teas, movie nights and doggy days out on the cards. For operating hours and contact information, hit up our handy Stumble Guide.

The Stumble Guide is our comprehensive Brisbane dining guide with more than 2400 places to eat, drink, shop and play.
