Bakery Lane pops the cork on newcomer Uh Oh Bottle-O & Wine Bar

Bakery Lane is in the midst of a renaissance period, evolving into one of the most popular micro precincts in Fortitude Valley. The recent arrivals of award-winning restaurant Joy and late-night pasta parlour Uh Oh Spaghettio have bolstered the laneway's cadre of eateries, but the laneway's latest arrival is looking to activate the hub even more. Uh Oh Bottle-O & Wine Bar is the boozy younger sibling of Uh Oh Spaghettio, a pint-sized sipping spot stocking new-wave wines, craft beers and boutique spirits – all of which are available to drink on site, in the laneway or to take to The Valley's plethora of BYO-friendly restaurants.

Saying Sam Holman and Samantha Fitzpatrick have been busy lately is severely underselling their jam-packed schedule. The owners of The Black Lab Coffee Co. and Cakes ‘n’ Shit recently joined the ranks of Brisbane’s nighttime hospitality set, opening Uh Oh Spaghettio – a colourful late-night pasta spot and cocktail bar – in Bakery Lane back in September. While most folks would be eager to exhale and catch their breath between projects, the Sams have already opened another joint just across the lane from their two-level eatery. Uh Oh Bottle-O & Wine Bar is exactly as it says on the label – a cosy haunt for a nightcap and a handy spot to grab a bottle of vino or a six-pack of brews to take to dinner nearby. Unbeknownst to many, Bakery Lane is licensed for BYO – a nifty feature that made the idea of opening a bottle shop in the laneway a no-brainer for the Uh Oh team. While Uh Oh Spaghettio boasts a hotel licence that allows it to operate three satellite bottle shops of its own, the team has elected to hold those opportunities in reserve for now – instead paying to extend the licence across the laneway. This means folks are able to pop in for a drink inside or they can purchase a bottle of anything (that includes beer, wine and spirits) to take an enjoy in Bakery Lane’s open-air seating space (perhaps accompanied by a serve of fried chicken from Nomnom Korean or pork and cabbage dumplings from Gung Ho). While the licence prevents the Uh Oh team from opening the bottle and pouring for you outside, they are able to provide ice and glasses if needed.

While the Sams don’t strictly classify themselves as suds-savvy sippers or expert oenophiles, they have fostered an appreciation for boutique beers and new-world wines that they’re eager to share with others – especially thoughtful brews and natural biodynamic drops that are becoming increasingly popular Australia wide. The driving ethos behind Uh Oh Bottle-O & Wine Bar is simple – to make cool and different drinks more accessible to the general public, ensuring information is easy to digest so as to gently nudge taste boundaries outward. Featured on the eye-catching geometric shelves and in the fridges is a selection of smashable plonk, including bottles of juicy pet-nats, zingy skin-on varieties and silky staples. The craft-beer selection heroes local names, with an ever-rotating selection of ales available in mix-and-match six packs for those looking to curate their drinking experience. As for spirits, several small-batch Australian distilleries are represented alongside some established names. The bar itself, which can seat up to ten patrons, extends its selection to just about everything you see around you, while appetising cheese boards are the perfect accompaniment to any libation choice. This hideaway will also be hosting tastings for feature wines and regular events that showcase a selection of niche favourites curated by the Uh Oh team – like interesting beers from Japan, for example. For now, Uh Oh Bottle-O & Wine Bar is amply stocked and ready to not only be the final piece of the puzzle for Bakery Lane proper, but also your weekend dinner and drink plans.
