The round-up: the best spots in Brisbane to get a slice of vegan pizza

Plant-based dining isn't a foodie trend – it's a full-on movement that's here to stay. With many eaters switching to diets that eschew animal products entirely, vegan-friendly dining has become a big area of expansion. Naturally, one of the first dishes to get the plant-based treatment was pizza – even large-scale slice slingers like Domino's has jumped in on the action in recent years. Brisbane’s got a host of pizza joints that whip up covetable circles of heaven topped with all manner of vegan-friendly ingredients for dine-in and delivery. So, if you’re new to the vegan lifestyle, it might be handy to bookmark this list of Brisbane's best vegan pizzas next time you get a hankering for a slice.

Nonna’s Nightmare, West End: While most die-hard fans of Italian cuisine might have some trepidation about plant-based interpretations, the team behind Nonna’s Nightmare proves that there’s nothing to fear when it comes to vegan-friendly pizza. The sourdough pizzas here are made using a special flour blend that is light on the stomach, before being topped with tomato basil sauce, plant-based mozzarella, plant-based bacon, roasted mushrooms, vegan pork-and-fennel sausages and much, much more.

Corbett & Claude, various locations: Pizza and pasta is a specialty at Corbett & Claude, and though it’s loaded with carnivorous options, there’s a dedicated vegan-friendly section that will tickle the tastebuds of most plant-based eaters. The Veganist is Corbett & Claude’s go-to vegan pizza, which is topped with a tasty layering of Napoletana sauce, vegan cheese, eggplant, zucchini, chilli oil, olives and sun-dried tomatoes.

Stone & Brew, Highgate Hill: This welcoming neighbourhood bar and pizza spot specialises in two things – cold beer and cracking pizza. When it comes to the latter, plant-based diners are spoiled for choice. One half of the pizza menu is dedicated to vegetarian options (that’s a whopping ten pizzas), all of which can be upgraded with vegan cheese upon request.

Veganism Pizzeria, West End: If you’re seeking an option that guarantees lots of options for plant-based diners, Veganism Pizzeria has what you seek – it’s in the name, after all! This hole-in-the-wall slice slinger offers its take on classics like the margherita and pepperoni (vegan, of course), but also serves up out-of-the-box options like vegan roasted duck, smashed avocado, falafel and barbecue pineapple chicken, plus even vegan-cheese calzones.

Piante Pizza, various locations: Those of you fluent in Italian will already know that piante translates to plant, which means Piante Pizza is putting its name on the line when it comes to plant-based slices. This crew specialises in giving hand-stretched Neapolitan-style pizza the vegan treatment – no cheese or animal products come near this offering. Traditional marinara pizzas (the classic option boasting a tomato base, oregano and garlic) are joined on the menu by diavola pizzas (tomato, spicy vegan salami, Ligurian olives and plant-based mozzarella) and pizzas loaded with Swiss brown mushrooms, black truffle paste mozzarella and lemon thyme. Follow Piante Pizza’s Instagram account to find out where it will be popping up every week.

Fitz + Potts, Nundah: Fitz + Potts has been pro vegan since its first day of operation, staunchly going to bat for plant-based food and craft beer in equal measure. Although its menu is small, diners will still be able to snack on 12-inch made-to-order pizzas including the Mushroom (truffle and brie-style cheeze base, grilled mushrooms, mozzarella-style cheeze and truffle aioli) and the Meaty (tomato and hickory barbecue sauce, pan-fried ‘meat’-balls, spicy chorizo-style chunks, sliced bratwurst-style sausage, chargrilled capsicum, Spanish red onion and a sprinkling of mozzarella and parmesan-style cheezes.

Amalfi Pizzeria, Clayfield: Crispy Neapolitan-style pizzas are a specialty at Amalfi and so are vegan varieties. These pizzas, topped with liberal amounts of vegan mozzarella, come in five varieties – capricciosa (tomato pizza sauce, mushrooms, black olives and artichokes), salsiccia (vegan sausage, caramelised onion and wild rocket), Hawaiian (vegan ham and pineapple), tartufo (fresh mixed mushrooms, truffle olive oil and parsley) and the traditional margherita. You can even get a garlic and rosemary focaccia pizza if you’ve got a substantial carb craving!

Sugo mi, Bulimba: This Oxford Street restaurant is up there with the best of them in terms of primo pizza, so plant-based pals can rejoice knowing that Sugo Mi’s verdura pizza is vegan-friendly. This supremely satisfying slice is topped with smoked sugo, grilled capsicum, black olives, smoked eggplant and basil.

Salt Meats Cheese, various locations: Okay, yes – two of the three words in Salt Meats Cheese’s name aren’t exactly vegan friendly, but that doesn’t mean that its menu isn’t accommodating. Here, SMC’s vegetarian pizza options can be made vegan upon request, including the classic margherita, vegetariana, buffalo and super truffle pizzas. Bellissimo!

The Burrow, West End: Plant-based eaters have long been able to count The Burrow as a vegan-friendly oasis at lunch and dinner time. Pizza is a point of pride for the kitchen here, which serves a range of vegan pizzas including the Brother From Another Mother (Fable plant-based slow-cooked pulled pork with red onion, fire pepper strips and Notzarella vegan cheese), Bobba Fetta (vegan fetta cheese, watermelon cubes, strawberry wedges, red onion, cherry tomato, black olives and balsamic reduction) and the Tim Curry III (potato bahjee dumplings, curry sauce, red onion, tomato, baby spinach, Notzarella vegan cheese and a sprinkle of spiced dukka).

Arrivederci Pizza, Milton: If you jump for joy when you see a dedicated vegan section on the menu at your local, then you’ll love Arrivederci Pizza on Park Road. Not only does it boast a vegan offering encompassing snacks, pastas and dessert, its pizza selection features eight options. Moroccan-inspired options, vegan-friendly Hawaiian pizzas, Mediterranean kinds and veggie-loaded pizzas comprise only half of what’s available. We have a feeling this might be a regular choice for plant-based pals.

Prova Pizzeria, Stafford Heights: Anyone in Brisbane’s north will tell you that Prova Pizzeria is one of the city’s best spots for an authentic woodfired pizza. While the menu doesn’t offer a dedicated vegan option, plant-based eaters can opt for vegan cheese on any pizza.

Olive & Angelo, Brisbane City: This inner-city eatery keeps an eye out for our vegan pals, keeping things flexible with the option of topping its woodfired pizzas with vegan cheese or coconut feta. If you prefer a streamlined decision-making process, opt for the verdura – a vegan pizza boasting San Marzano tomato, mushroom, eggplant, basil, roasted capsicum, coconut feta and onion.

PitStop Pizza, Coorparoo: Fancy the taste of something homemade? The crew at Coorparoo’s PitStop pizza has an entire section of its menu dedicated to dairy and meat-free slices. There are eight kinds to choose from, with options topped with the likes of marinated roasted capsicum, artichoke hearts, pumpkin, mushrooms, homemade pizza sauce and vegan cheese.

Il Forno, Sandgate: We love pizza parties, but they aren’t any fun if someone with dietary restrictions has to miss out. Il Forno’s menu, which blends Italian flavours with an Australian twist, has four kinds of vegan pizzas available – the classic margherita, vegetable-loaded Vegetariana, a pumpkin, spinach and pine nut pizza and a lovely Mediterranean option.
