As a key driving force behind the openings of local gems Leaf Espresso, Moose & Gibson and Habitat Restaurant & Bar, Malcolm Watts has an incredible batting average when it comes to success. After noticing a need for more full-service cafe options in Morningside, Malcolm paired his business-savvy mindset with a knack for conjuring concepts that resonate, setting about filling the gap with newly-opened eatery Where the Wolves Eat. Malcolm and his wife Danielle settled on a vision for a down-to-earth eatery that covered all bases, with capable service that offered warmth and professionalism. The spacious and modern cafe sits in between Lick! Ice-Cream and Carolina Kitchen, with an open-plan fit-out that encompasses interior and exterior seating areas, a fully equipped coffee bar and a few wolfish murals on opposing walls.
When it came to crafting the menu for Where the Wolves Eat, Mal and Danielle sought out long-time collaborator Greg Appleby to fill the head chef role. Given free rein, Greg has assembled a collection of no-BS dishes that are honest, hearty and robust. The all-day offering includes cacio e pepe spaghetti with grana padano, pecorino and poached eggs, Swiss brown mushrooms with white bean and kale stew and herbed cashew cheese, crispy pork belly with potato rosti and sweet-corn puree, and fried chicken French toast sandwiches with chipotle slaw. Those with suggestions or feedback on the menu are encouraged to speak up, with Mal, Dani and Greg committed to catering to all tastes. Coffee beans are exclusively supplied by emerging local roasting outfit Hardy Boys, while non-coffee drinkers can sip on organically brewed ginger beer, cold-pressed juice from Impressed, shakes, smoothies and frappes. Beer taps have been installed for those keen to blow the froth off a cold one, with the Ballymore Brew (a collaborative ale between Newstead Brewing Co. and Queensland Rugby) offering a tasty mid-strength option. The coming months will see a Friday night trade kick off, with plenty of function opportunities and group banquet packages to come.
