Woolworths ditches $1 milk in an effort to support Australian dairy farmers

In a move that is set to help struggling dairy farmers across the country, supermarket giant Woolworths has announced that as of today, Tuesday February 19, it is raising the price of its home-brand fresh milk.

It’s no secret that Australia’s dairy farmers are having a tough time – a deregulated industry and low international market price for milk means that discount domestic milk is hitting our farmers in the hip pocket. To relieve some of this sting, Woolworths is completely ditching the sale of its $1-per-litre home-brand milk, upping the price of its two- and three-litre varieties by ten cents per litre each, making them $2.20 and $3.30 respectively. The price change, though small, will deliver higher milk prices to more than 450 Australian dairy farmers supplying Woolies with the goods. Woolworths has committed to deliver the full the ten-cent increase right back to farmers, hoping to inject some much-needed confidence back into the industry.

This latest gesture follows last year’s successful launch of Drought Relief Milk, an initiative carried out by Woolworths and Coles that has delivered has $5.8 million in relief to more than 285 dairy farmers since September 2018. When it comes back to home-brand milk prices, Coles and Aldi are yet to budge on their $1-per-litre varieties – but we’ll keep you posted with more information as it comes to hand. If you want to support our farmers even further, we’ve got a handy list of the brands you should be popping in your trolley.
