Credit cards at the ready – Amazon Australia is set to launch!

Friends, we don’t mean to alarm you but today is a pretty monumental one in terms of Australia’s retail landscape. Things are about to change forever because today, Thursday November 23, marks the soft launch of online shopping giant Amazon in Australia. After months of secrecy and setting up, the (virtual) doors will finally be flung open for our boundless purchasing pleasure.

The secret is well and truly out – due to an internal email obtained by Lifehacker, it has been confirmed that Amazon Australia will be up and running from today. Select Amazon sellers were sent the email earlier this week, informing them that their pricing, stock and product details should be up and ready to go on the Amazon Marketplace in preparation for today’s soft launch. A select handful of customers will be given access to the offering just in time for America’s huge Black Friday sales, with Amazon remaining tight-lipped about just how many customers will be in this testing group.

Amazon Australia’s distribution centre has been set up in Melbourne’s Dandenong South at the Pellicano M2 industrial park. This location was strategically chosen to give drivers and road freighters easy and smooth access to the South Gippsland Highway, the Monash Highway, and EastLink, ensuring the company could uphold its internationally high standards of speedy delivery. Details about the products offered up in today’s soft launch are still under wraps, but various news sources are claiming that as many as 500 retailers will be part of Amazon’s Australian marketplace offering from the launch.

To get shopping on Amazon Australia, all you need to do is head to the website and create an account. If you already have an account with Amazon’s US version, you can use that to log in to the Australian website too. The launch has been set for 2:00 pm, so your best bet at this point is to keep hitting that refresh button and patrol the site for when it ticks over.
