The space
When Woolloongabba Antique Centre directors Sarah Jane Walsh and Paul Butler were looking for a suitable location for their new antiques emporium, it had to meet a few strict criteria. They wanted a corner space, a heritage building and 1000sqm of space to cater for their dedicated collection of dealers. In today’s property landscape that might be a tall order, but Lady Luck smiled on the duo, leading them to the current site of Camp Hill Antique Centre on Old Cleveland Road. Sarah Jane and Paul immediately fell in love with the building, which was once home to Planet Theatre. The mid-century building boasts an eclectic, old-school vibe, which lends itself brilliantly to the Miami deco-inspired cool of Camp Hill Antique Centre’s eatery – TART Cafe. Antique dealers occupy the rear of the building, as dozens of nooks filled with wares spread over two levels.
The food and drink
Shoppers are encouraged to start or finish their shopping with a bite to eat at TART Cafe, Camp Hill Antique Centre’s in-house eatery. Sarah Jane and Paul have cultivated a menu of fresh and healthy dishes, paired with a selection of tasty cakes, tarts and sweets. The sit-down menu extends from breakfast, through to lunch and beyond into afternoon tea, with the majority of the menu crafted from locally sourced and organic produce. Popular dishes include the house-made granola, paleo salads, breakfast doughnuts (yes, you read that correctly), tasty burgers and milkshakes, as well as cabinet filled to bursting point with specialty cakes that are dairy and gluten-free.
The details
Camp Hill Antique Centre has expanded its dealer count in the move, and now boasts 70 individual traders under one roof. Among this number are professional antique dealers, avid hobbyists and even interior designers, who source a varied array of pieces from a range of eras. A pop-up barbershop will continue to run on the first Sunday of the month, while the antique centre will also host various craft workshops, teaching macrame, rug making and lamp making in the coming weeks.
