Room to grow – beloved boutique Contra unveils its spacious new digs

Since its inception in 2016, Contra has been kitting out Brisbane folk in some of the coolest and most cutting-edge threads around. The boutique has garnered a reputation for curating an amazing selection of contemporary casual brands, operating out of an intimate Adelaide Street space in the CBD. Both locals and visitors have embraced the store with open arms – so much so that it has outgrown its flagship space and moved into some much roomier digs on Charlotte Street.

Brisbane is a tough city to crack when it comes to new things, but Contra has managed to forge its own unique niche in our fashion landscape. After honing the store’s offering and concept in its original space, owner Matt Kyte decided that the time was right to kick things up a notch. Contra’s new location sees a departure from the madness of the central CBD vibe, giving the team space to do its thing but still be easily accessible. You can expect to find the same amazing level of attentive service and killer brands – there’s just more room to move now.

The new Contra store truly is a stunning space, housed within the heritage listed Charlotte House building. The team decided to let the building’s original features shine, maximising the space’s 132-year history with a fit-out by local legends Mast Furniture. The clean, concise styling of the store lends itself perfectly to Contra’s offering, which has evolved over time to include more experimental labels as well as its core collection of fashion-forward daily wear. Contra’s team is already playing with the space and testing its potential – the unofficial launch party was focused around an in-store art installation and souvenir t-shirt by Aden Sargeant. This concept of immersion in the local creative community is something that the team plans to continue.

The new Contra store is open now on Charlotte Street – check out opening hours and more details in the Stumble Guide.
