During those hours, we like to reach for a cuppa – and now Victoria Bitter has made the choice a little easier with its new masterpiece, VB Tea. Made from premium Ceylon black tea leaves and VB’s iconic Super Pride Hops, the limited-edition brew is blended in Australia using both local and imported ingredients, and boasts the distinct aroma and taste of VB without containing any alcohol. The brewer has been encouraging cricket fans to boycott the standard cup of English Breakfast tea as they spend countless late nights and early mornings supporting the Aussies in The Ashes. And, as it turns out, they listened, with all slabs of 24 pyramid teabags selling out from VB’s online store. Keep an eye out as the brewer is considering restocking.
Spoiler alert: these eggs aren’t real. Yes, these eggs – looking perfectly cracked, fluffy and cooked to perfection – are not real. In fact, the plant-based alternative is made from the humble mung bean. Food tech company JUST discovered that the bean contains a protein that tastes and scrambles just like an egg, meaning it can be used as a substitute in recipes such as brekky burritos, fried rice, omelettes, pad Thai, French toast, frittatas and more. JUST Eggs are free from cholesterol, saturated fat, artificial flavours and dairy, while offering roughly the same protein content as a real chicken’s egg based on portion size. Gods of Food
Food-based reality TV series have certainly captivated viewers over the past decade, but no matter how much we love watching a celebrity chef rattling the pans in the kitchen, there’s a fair bit of pageantry and ego we can poke fun at. From the mind of comedy writer Rekha Shankar comes hilarious new mockumentary culinary profile series Gods of Food, which will premiere on CollegeHumor’s subscription-based streaming service DROPOUT on Thursday August 8. The six-episode season will shed comedic light on some of the characters behind fine dining, from the intensely ‘rustic’ chef to the molecular gastronomist. A new episode of Gods of Food will be released every Thursday through to September 12, with each profiling a different fictional chef. Directed by Michael Schaubach, the Chef’s Table parody also features commentary from real-life celebrity chefs Alison Roman, Hugh Acheson, Richard Blais and Jet Tila. Watch the trailer online.
New emoji release
While you may have missed the fact that World Emoji Day was celebrated on July 17, there’s a good chance you’ve heard whispers that Apple is set to release a new selection of emoji for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. Diversity is a key focus with the new release, boasting 75 different options for the Holding Hands emoji where users can select any combo of skin tone and gender, as well as prosthetic limbs, a guide dog, walking stick, hearing aid and wheelchairs. Food and animal lovers will be chuffed to see a bunch of new food emoji, including a waffle, falafel, garlic and butter, plus some great animals like a flamingo, skunk and sloth.
