Over a year ago, qualified illustrator Ivy Niu (the person) decided to fully immerse herself in the fashion business and start IVY NIU (the label). After periods of self-doubt and worrying that the venture would not take off, she threw caution to the wind and dove headfirst into the industry after researching and asking around for advice on getting started. The result is a label that truly stands out from the pack – each piece is loaded with whimsy and charm that reflects the designer’s desire to be easily distinguishable.
Ivy’s debut collection is anchored in simple silhouettes that feature organic shapes and her own signature illustrative designs. The motifs she chooses are largely inspired by the art of children’s storybooks and it shows – you will find wrap dresses adorned with seals, silk shirts emblazoned with assorted socks, high-waisted mini-skirts with ice-cream turtles (a thousand times yes) and tent dresses sprinkled with lemons. Ivy illustrates and digitally composes the prints –drawing each element by hand – then creates a template to paint over each shape, ensuring each print is bespoke but still readable on clothing.
To add a dash of daring to your wardrobe, you can shop IVY NIU online right now or visit The Paper Empire on Sunday August 6 from 2:00–5:00 pm for the brand’s launch (psst … there will be Queen of Pops and Sofi Spritz).
