Dazzling dramas, rib-tickling rom coms and Hawaiian getaways – the best tv shows to binge in lockdown

Well, well, well. Another lockdown, another opportunity to kick up our feet and binge some sweet, sweet content. Thankfully, our favourite streaming services have just released a heap of exciting new shows. From dark comedies that will transport you to islands afar to sparkling reboots of old favourites, here are a few streaming gems that are worth binging during lockdown.

The White Lotus – Binge
Created, written and directed by creative powerhouse Mike White, The White Lotus is a dark comedy that follows various guests – including spoilt teenagers and entitled newlyweds – and employees at a tropical resort over the span of a week. The show is jam-packed with an all-star cast including Steve Zahn, Connie Britton, Molly Shannon, Jake Lacy, Alexandra Daddario and Jennifer Coolidge aka Stifler’s Mum, which in itself, should be enough to get you hooked. If it isn’t, you’ve also got the breathtaking background of Hawaii and some truly hilarious scenes of rich people behaving badly. You can currently watch The White Lotus on Binge, with new episodes dropping weekly on Mondays.

Gossip Girl – Binge
“Gossip Girl here, your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan’s elite…”. When the OG Gossip Girl wrapped up in 2012, many thought the iconic voice of a gossip-obsessed generation would be silenced forever. Oh, how we were wrong. Almost nine years after the original blog went dark, Gossip Girl is back with a vengeance and now the Big Brother-esque icon is following a whole new generation of private school teens. The difference this time around? We discover the identity of Gossip Girl in the first episode. If you’re keen to dive head-first into the action-packed lives of New York’s richest youngsters (again), you can catch the GG reboot on Binge, with new episodes dropping every Thursday.

Dr. Death – Stan
Dr. Death is inspired by the terrifying true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch. An idolised American doctor, Duntsch’s life does a 180 after patients entering his operating room start leaving permanently disabled or dead. As the death toll begins to rise, people start to notice – in particular, two fellow physicians and a Dallas prosecutor, who set out to stop him. Starring everyone’s favourite nice guy Joshua Jackson (this isn’t the Pacey you know and love here) as well as screen veterans Christian Slater and Alec Baldwin, this crime drama will keep you on the edge of your seat – and leave you gobsmacked that this actually happened. You can watch Dr. Death on Stan.

Ted Lasso – Apple TV+
Jason Sudeikis plays small-time football coach Ted Lasso in this heartwarming comedy series, which follows Ted as he is hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, despite having no experience coaching soccer. With season one proving to be a feel-good hit, which went on to be nominated for a heap of awards (Jason won a Golden Globe for his performance in the series), season two has followed closely on its heels – and it’s just as delightful. You can watch Ted Lasso seasons one and two (with new episodes dropping weekly) on Apple TV+.

Starstruck – ABC iview
Easily the most easy-to-binge television series on this list, Starstruck is six episodes of hilarious antics from the brilliant mind of New Zealand comedian, writer and actor Rose Matafeo. Coined as a modern-day Notting Hill, the show follows Jessie (played by Matafeo), whose drunken New Year’s eve hook-up becomes somewhat complicated when she finds out her one night stand is actually a mega movie star. From there, you’ll fall in love with the affable characters, Richard Curtis rom-com references and the undeniable chemistry between Jessie and leading man Tom (played by Nikesh Patel). With the episodes clocking around 22 minutes each, you’ll be able to gobble this one up in one sitting – with popcorn, of course. Find Starstruck series one on ABC iview.

Loki – Disney+
If you’re missing your annual dose of Avengers goodness then fear not, superhero seekers, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded onto the small screen this year thanks to new streaming service Disney+. Everyone’s favourite villain Loki is back as the God of Mischief in a new series that takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Also starring Owen Wilson (wow), Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Sasha Lane, Loki requires some previous watching (at minimum, the last two Avengers movies) but is well worth the tv time for fans, both new and old. You’ll find this time-travelling gem on Disney+.

Mare of Eastown – Binge
A murder mystery. A gloomy Pennsylvania town. A vaping Kate Winslet. Mare of Eastown has all of the makings of a sensational crime drama and, suffice to say, it hits it out of the park. The show centres around Mare Sheehan (played by Winslet), a police investigator in a small Pennsylvania town who is investigating a brutal murder. Also starring American Horror Story alum Evan Peters as well as Australia’s Guy Pearce and Angourie Rice, this one will keep you guessing until the very end. Seriously, you will be glued to your screen in anticipation. Binge Mare of Eastown on, well, Binge.
