Fight the hype – Uniform Standard’s sneakers are built to last

If there’s one thing the sneaker industry is known for, it’s hype. It feels like every day a new must-have shoe is being released only to be forgotten when the next big launch comes along. This isn’t exactly helping fashion’s efforts to improve sustainability, an issue close to the hearts of Uniform Standard’s founders. They’re reinventing what is means to be a sneaker brand by creating limited quantities of timeless sneakers that are built to last – it’s a well-clad step in the right direction.

Georgina Taylor and Stephen Galea started UK-based Uniform Standard after 20 years working as product developers. Their motivation? A vision to produce sneakers with a clear approach towards sustainability and a strong focus on social and environmental responsibility. In the flesh this equals sneakers made from “Gold Standard” Italian leathers certified by The Leather Working Group. Any parts of the shoe not made with leather are made from a mix of recycled rubber, cork and rice husk shells (who knew?). Sustainability doesn’t stop with the shoe – all kicks are wrapped in paper made from recycled coffee cups and placed into plastic-free boxes made from kraft card before they’re sent off.

Wondering what the shoes look like? Uniform Standards’ style is described as quintessential British minimalism. Sneakers come in a range of simple, low-rise silhouettes resembling iconic designs like the basketball profile and the German army trainer. Choose from materials including leather, suede and nubuck in a variety of neutral shades with soothing sounding names like moss and earth. Like the sound of Uniform Standard?
