A venue within a venue – The Tivoli gets set to debut its intimate new entertainment space

Brisbane’s live-music scene is all the richer thanks to beloved venue The Tivoli. The Fortitude Valley mainstay has seen a whole heap of amazing artists come through since its iteration as a live entertainment venue, bringing local legends and international stars to its stage. In news that is bound to bring big smiles to gig-goers, The Tivoli is about to unveil a seriously slick new addition – say hello to What’s Golden, a brand-new entertainment space being built within the hallowed walls of the iconic venue.

What’s Golden is indulging in a bit of venue-ception – it’s a space within a space. The brand-new, custom-built space will sit within The Tivoli’s existing central foyer, taking the form of a 250-person standing capacity performance venue. Designer Aaron Barton has come on board to realise the project’s stage, while set designer Sarah Winter will be imbuing the space with its own separate identity to work seamlessly with The Tivoli’s trademark old-world aesthetic. As well as a state-of-the-art stage with all of the audio and lighting trimmings, What’s Golden will also come with a schmick new box office, cocktail menu and craft-beer bar. As if that’s not enough, the spot will also be saluting the sun with a brand-new daytime nook for coffees and Bloody Marys.

When it comes to the talent on stage, What’s Golden will welcome a rotating roster of diverse acts across both local and global spectrums. By virtue of its capacity, the venue will skew a focus towards spotlighting eclectic and genre-pushing names that are on the come-up – and it’s not just taking music. You can expect to find cabaret, stand-up comedy, contemporary performance and even curated parties and club nights taking place. Some artists who have already been announced include alt-pop queens CLEA and Sahara Beck, local indie-rock legends Good Boy, plus provocative showings from Betty Grumble and HONCHO DISKO. If you’re the sort of person who likes to brag about seeing certain acts before they become famous, this will be the spot to find them. To expand its repertoire even further, the space will also be available for private celebrations and corporate events – so it’s time to start buttering up your boss.

What’s Golden will welcome its first punters from August 27 – we’ll have a closer look for you when it opens. In the meantime, check out the website to get excited for upcoming gigs and shows.
