Make chores fun and eco-friendly with Zilch’s fully compostable kitchen range

In July last year we introduced you, dear readers, to Zilch – an online marketplace committed to turning your daily routine into a plastic-free one. If you've been wanting to change to a more waste-free channel during your everyday programming and make some eco-friendly choices (it takes zilch effort, by the way), you'll be over the moon to hear that Zilch has just extended its range to include kitchen essentials. You'll be ticking off chores faster than Mary Poppins in no time.

It’s a grim truth that plastic items we consider everyday essentials are destined to outlive us by a few hundred years. It’s because of this frightening fact that Sydney-sider Rachel Sebastian decided to start up virtual marketplace Zilch. Not afraid of getting her hands dirty, Rachel has made it her mission to personally test and sift through some not-so-satisfactory ‘greenwashing’ claims to bring you some quality tried-and-tested zero-waste alternatives. Following the successful launch of a line of bathroom products, Rachel has put down the shampoo bar and is picking up the dishcloth. The result is a personalised box of zero-waste kitchen necessities that will have you looking forward to doing the dishes (yes, really).

All you have to do to secure your box of goodies is simply choose the base items you want in the box (these can include a reusable Swedish dish cloth, a dishwashing block from Minimal Essentials or a bamboo dish brush from Yesēco). Then you can opt to add extras – there’s a coconut scourer that’s great for tackling stubborn stains, a 100-percent biodegradable pot scraper and a bamboo dish brush replacement head. Finally, you have the choice of three stoneware soap dishes to add to your abode – pepper, chalk or truffle. The kicker is that everything in the range is compostable (apart from the soap dish), and all but the dishwashing block are package-free. Plus, there’s a little added incentive to add more products to your cart – snag three or more items and you’ll get five-percent off your purchase total, six or more and you’ll save 10-percent and 10 or more will get you a 15-percent discount. Once you’ve placed your order, the items are packed in fully compostable and recyclable packaging and delivered using carbon-neutral shipping. Want to stock up on some plastic-free kitchen gear? Make tracks here.
