Enjoy botanical cocktails and plant-based bites at Greenhouse Canteen & Bar’s new South Brisbane digs

While the plant-based dining boom undoubtedly has Brisbane firmly in its grasp, vegan eating has been a big thing on the Gold Coast for years now. Greenhouse Canteen & Bar was one of the earliest modern adopters of the cuisine on the coast, earning legions of loyal followers (vegans and meat-eaters alike) with a range of approachable, comforting and damn tasty plant-based dishes and cocktails. The concept has now come north with Greenhouse Canteen & Bar opening a new location in South Brisbane, establishing a hip nighttime haunt for dedicated vegans and the culinary curious.

After cementing Greenhouse Canteen & Bar as a go-to destination for meat-free dining on the coast, owner Natalie Evans turned her thoughts towards potential franchising opportunities. She quickly found that the demand for her brand of night-centric plant-based hospitality was high and after establishing a new location in Coolangatta in late 2017, she looked to Brisbane. Much like the Gold Coast did when Natalie first started the Greenhouse concept, Brisbane has fostered a burgeoning hunger for vegan eats, making the decision to expand northward a no-brainer. Natalie and her team secured a vacant space in South Brisbane (directly across the road from Musgrave Park) to install a new bar and restaurant, scoring a blank canvas to work with. Natalie recruited Studio Yugen to apply the Greenhouse aesthetic on the space, which boasts staple touches such as timber tables, cross-backed chairs, pressed tin, VJ panels and plenty of greenery.

Natalie’s approach to plant-based dining is to first make it look and smell amazing. After all, you eat with your eyes and nose before the first bite touches your lips. The dishes are designed with an element of familiarity, ensuring each meal is accessible for all diets and tastes. Greenhouse Canteen & Bar’s menu replicates that of its coastal cousins, bringing north signature dishes such as the buffalo cauliflower wings, jackfruit enchiladas, pandan pancakes and chilli con carne nachos, plus a range of hearty newcomers. The menu will change three times a year, but for now you can also snack on mushroom fillet tacos, rice macaroni and cheese and seasonal desserts. The bar boasts an Australian-heavy array of beverages, specialising in colourful botanical-based cocktails (blueberry and thyme mojito, anyone?), sustainable, organic and vegan wines, and as local beers from Stone & Wood and Pickled Pig.

Greenhouse Canteen & Bar will be hosting a launch party next from 5:00 pm on Friday June 1, which will be open to the public. For more information, be sure to check out the Stumble Guide.
