The art of the sandwich is one that is easy to learn but hard to master. Sure, you don’t need to have a PhD to layer some fillings between a couple of slices of bread, but it takes skill to make a sandwich that is truly memorable. Jordan Trottemant is the owner and operator of Crumbs, a cosy sandwich bar located on Oxford Street in the heart of Bulimba. The premise of Crumbs is simple – Jordan wanted to break away from the saturated sandwich market (where pulled-pork and beef brisket sandwiches have become overplayed), offering a simple back-to-basics menu that targets tastebuds the right way. Working with renowned chef Ben Williamson, Jordan helped devise a menu that covered the essentials – six options, none of which break the bank. The menu segues through meaty options (ham with mustard pickles and cheddar, mortadella with provolone and green-olive marscapone, and Cuban-style ham with roast pork, mustard and Swiss cheese) and meat-free choices (stracciatella with Roma tomato and basil, avocado with zucchini, pesto and feta, and a deep-fried mozzarella sandwich with tomato-garlic dip). If you’re after something sweet, swing by and nab Crumbs’ take on the classic peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich, boasting brioche and candied peanuts.
