Just when you thought the team at Howard Smith Wharves were settling down for a breather, the booming precinct announces something new to look forward to. Last week, Jonathan Barthelmess – owner and operator of stellar riverside Greek restaurant GRECA – announced plans for a waterfront Japanese izakaya and bar, set to open in the space previously set to house Matt Yazbek’s Brisbane expansion of Toko by October 2019. Inspired by Jonathan’s visits to Tokyo (where he owns The Apollo in Ginza) and his acclaimed restaurant Cho Cho San in Potts Point, Sydney, the as-yet-unnamed restaurant will reportedly feature a raw section based on sustainable seafood, specially sourced and selected Wagyu beef and an extensive sake and wine list. We also hear that the venue will boast an upstairs vinyl bar with an extensive and curated whiskey list.
