Josie North is the brainchild of Matt Roggenkamp from The Single Guys, which opened in Clements Arcade on Sherwood Road (next to Genkotsu Ramen) at the end of May 2016. With an interior designed by Woodster’s Oliver Burscough, Josie North offers coffee roasted by Seven Seeds, Small Batch Roasting Co. and Wood and Co Coffee, as well as a menu of seasonal dishes for breakfast and lunch. In November 2022, the neighbourhood began open at night as a wine bar from Thursday to Saturday, giving locals of Toowong and its surrounding suburbs the cool and casual nighttime haunt they’ve long desired. The team has translated the same refined, quality-driven approach to its post-sunset identity, applying a tasteful curatorial ethos to a punchy menu of vino and snacks. Josie North’s wine list boasts a tidy selection of Australian and international drops, with a distinct lean towards lo-fi, minimal-intervention wines sourced from small-scale producers. Roughly five or six wines are available by the glass, with a constantly updating stash of rare and unique bottles also on hand for those seeking something new to try each visit. Though small, Josie North’s kitchen will still be doling out a selection of delicious drinking food – think focaccia with dips, market fish crudo, ‘nduja toast with ox-heart tomato, burrata with broad bean and herbs, and chicken cotoletta with Italian slaw and truffle hot sauce.
