Once the site of the notorious Bubbles Bath-House illegal casino and ‘massage parlour’ at the centre of the Fitzgerald Inquiry, 144 Wickham Street is now home to Les Bubbles, a Parisian steakhouse and bar from the incredible mind that is Damian Griffiths. The restaurateur is renowned for this tongue-in-cheek approach to his venues (think Kwan Brothers, Alfredo’s Pizzeria and Doughnut Time), and has completely embraced the building’s sordid past. Upstairs has the aesthetic of a traditional French bistro with a cheeky twist, with photos of infamous 1980s figures adorning the walls, and a red neon sign above the bar that reads ‘We regret to inform you we are no longer a brothel – Management’. Pleasure can instead be found in the form of steak frites, which is the focal point of Les Bubbles’ menu. Your steak will be seared to your liking, and served with bread, salad, sauce and bottomless fries. Vegetarian and pescatarian friends needn’t feel left out – there are options for you too – as well as kitsch traditional French desserts. Those after a pre- or post-dinner splash can head downstairs to the entirely tiled Bath-House bar and disco, which pays homage to the original massage parlour with an island bar and fully functional 15-person spa.
