Michael Tassis might be the busiest man in Brisbane hospitality right now. In 2019 Michael and his team opened Eagle Street eateries Massimo Restaurant & Bar and Rico Bar & Dining, following up this double effort in late-2020 with Fatcow Steak & Lobster. Michael’s takeover of Eagle Street continued in 2021 with Opa Bar + Mezze – a Greek-inspired concept that has moved into the site previously home to seafood restaurant Jellyfish. A substantial refit of the space courtesy of Clui Design and Tonic Projects has created an aesthetic inspired by the sun-soaked cities of the Greek Islands, stretching from its whitewashed interior to a shaded outdoor space. Opa’s inspirations are born out of Michael’s own upbringing and love of Greek cuisine, which is be featured across a range of authentic dishes modernised with a few contemporary tweaks – think ouzo-soaked saganaki, flash-fried calamari, moussaka drenched in béchamel, airy taramasalata and lamb souvla fresh from the spit. The bar specialises in mezze-style plates such as sheftalia (Cypriot sausages with tomato and red onion), grilled lamb ribs with a sprinkling of grilled oregano and a dollop of tyrokafteri, grilled htapodi (octopus), and lahanodolmades (pork and veal wrapped in cabbage leaves), while a range of signature cockails, Greek beers, wines and spirits will keep guests suitable watered as they feast.
