Ping Pong is a forthcoming Thai restaurant from the crew behind West End cafe Morning After and Newstead brekkie-roll hotspot Yolk. Located at Gasworks, Ping Pong looks to fill the glaring Asian-cuisine-shaped gap created by Peng You’s departure, with Ping Pong transforming the space with a striking and singular cosmetic overhaul. The 110-seater restaurant boasts an interior design conceived by Derlot, with a colour palette dominated by pink, from the custom-made furnishings to the neon light fixtures. An elaborate light feature – shaped like a cloud of ping-pong balls – adds pops of white above diner’s heads, while three pink picnic tables will sit outside for breezy feasting. The menu segues through bar snacks to share-style larger plates, with the kitchen team employing traditional home-style cooking techniques to add a level of grounded authenticity to the fare. In addition to Thai stir-fries and curries, the kitchen team is focusing on grilled morsels cooked using newly installed hibachi grills – think mouth-watering portions of grass-fed beef OP rib. As for the drinks, guests can select from a slim but sophisticated wine list favouring natural drops, a clutch of six-to-eight cocktails, two tap beers and some boozy slushies.
