When seasoned hospitality veterans Sean Moran and Patrick White tossed around ideas for a new concept, the idea of transforming unconventional spaces into cafes resonated. The concept of a micro cafe allowed the duo to actualise a convenient style of hospitality that boasted a smaller footprint without sacrificing quality, and so Pocket Micro Cafe was born. The cafe, which inhabits a 10-square metre space on Wharf Street provides a casual hangout for inner-city wanderers and a valuable lunchtime resource for the time-poor workers. The specialty here is delicious coffee from Mocopan and chef-designed toasties and salads assembled in an off-site kitchen. The Pocket Micro Cafe claims to offer the best toasties in town, and it’s easy to see why they’d say such – these sangas are legit. The secret is the ingredients, which are sourced locally and are head and shoulders above what you’d expect from a humble sandwich. Take these two for example – the Adelaide St boasts chicken, bacon, mozzarella, tarragon and mayo, while The Hungarian combines salami, Swiss cheese, pickles, fresh green peppers and mustard mayo. The resealable shake-and-take salads are also filled with fresh ingredients, with the likes of red rice and quinoa with apricot, pistachio and confit chicken, and red and golden beets with feta salads adding a gourmet hit to lunch. The coming months will see Pocket Micro Cafe add vegan and gluten-free items to the selection, as well as iced tea and coffee, pressed juices and compostable coffee cups.
