Newstead cooking school Golden Pig announced some big changes in 2018, temporarily closing its cafe and cooking school while it transformed into a fully-fledged restaurant. Owner and chef Katrina Ryan (ex-Rockpool, Sydney head chef) has worked with her partner, building designer Mark Ryan, on the semi-industrial restaurant rejuvenation, which highlights natural timber and concrete elements with plenty of lively greenery. Golden Pig has taken a pan-Asian approach to its menu, which includes a selection of small, medium and large share dishes. Patrons can sample the likes of twice-cooked pork baos, vegetarian potsticker dumplings, crispy fried Sichuan chicken, red bean cured marinated lamb ribs, turmeric curry of pork belly and tomato, and slow-cooed beef cheek with dried shiitake mushrooms. The restaurant and bar is open for dinner Tuesday to Saturday, while the cooking school continues to operate on Sundays and Mondays.
