The team behind popular nursery pandemic-era pop-up Green Space reinvented its model in 2021, with owners Angela Sclavos and Christina Habchi evolving the concept into The Green – a cafe, deli and homewares hub located within a new permanent space off James Street. The site (formerly home to REDSEA Gallery) boasts an aesthetic of contrasts and juxtapositions – think brutalist design, concrete elements and a sense of raw materiality offset by an abundance of foliage, as well as warm red hues inspired by the cedar trees of Lebanon as a nod to Angela and Christina’s Lebanese heritage. Central to The Green’s operational framework is Angela and Christina’s desire to celebrate the culinary culture of Lebanon, offering an approachable take on the cuisine that showcases the love and generosity synonymous with Middle Eastern cooking with some artistic flair. Warren Turnbull – a hatted chef known for his work at Sydney institutions Banc and Assiette – is overseeing The Green’s kitchen, creating fare that is recognisably Lebanese but with some savvy and inventive twists thrown in. The menu encompasses breakfast and lunch, with dishes like Lebanese-style sausage muffins, green shakshuka with smoked labne andgrilled zhug-marinated lamb cutlets featuring. The Green’s beverage list offers ST. ALi coffee in the morning, while a host of Australian and Lebanese wines, beers and cocktails (which boast a botanical focus to reflect The Green’s leafy origins) are available in the afternoon. Speaking of plants, those dining at The Green will be surrounded by vegetation, from the green pavilion at the front of the venue to the centrepieces at the heart of The Green’s communal tables. Available floor space is given over to cactus features, everyday houseplants and impressive sculptural plants, while a retail section stocks bespoke ceramics from Australian and Japanese makers as well as gardening equipment and even gear for pets.
