Dive in feet first. The regret at not having tried would be a scarier prospect ...

In Short ...

Brisbane’s very own Stokehouse Q restaurant at River Quay has been recognised as one of the finalists for Best New Restaurant in the ninth annual Wallpaper* Design Awards. Other finalists from around the world include The Attimo in Sao Paulo, The NoMad in New York, The Geist in Copenhagen and Dabbous in London. Designed by local architecture firm Arkhefield, Stokehouse Q also received accolades in the hospitality category at the Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) and the Interior Architecture State Award at the Queensland Architecture Awards in 2012. Interior designer for the restaurant, Angela Layton, envisaged the wooden spine that curves through the space as an extension of the riverbend, stamping a subtropical Queensland vibe onto the relaxed elegance of the stylings of the original Melbourne-based Stokehouse. Angela’s interior work can also been seen in the fit-outs of Next Door Kitchen and Bar, Olé, The Jetty and Urbane locally. The Weekend Edition spoke with Angela about her weekend essentials.

How do you like to start your weekend?
Friday afternoons at the park with my son and his friends. It puts a full stop on the week. Watching young boys play is always inspiring.

What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday morning?
A combination of pilates, coffee, a newspaper, a walk, and possibly a sleep in are ideal when it all works.

How do you like to unwind?
Either a long walk with my dog, or chilling out with good friends, good food and laughter.

What are your essentials for a well-spent weekend?
My son, not too much rushing around, good food, and possibly some art.

What’s something you’ve been meaning to do on the weekend but haven’t got around to yet?
I really want to go for a roadtrip north. The town of 1770 seems the furthest I could feasibly get in a weekend, though maybe it would need to be a four-day weekend.

What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday evening?
Cooking with friends and eating on my deck.

What are you looking forward to next weekend?
Going to the Anish Kapoor exhibition at the MCA in Sydney for a friend’s birthday.

What are you reading at the moment?
I’m on a Haruki Murakami bender after having devoured 1Q84 last year. I’m currently on Kafka on the Shore.

What inspires you?
A combination of travel and art. Particularly travelling to art!

What was your childhood dream?
To work in photography. I had an idea that I could get paid to travel. I think now that I’d prefer to travel in my downtime and enjoy the photography for myself.

What has been your greatest achievement?
The ultimate cliche – my son. He’s awesome.

What is success to you?
Balance – enjoying what I do for a living as well as enjoying life. It’s harder to get the work/play/life triangle working in sync than it sounds.

What are your words of wisdom?
Dive in feet first. The regret at not having tried would be a scarier prospect.

Only a local would know … the fastest way to cool down on the hottest day in summer is swimming at Cedar Creek.
