Natasha Chipman

Natasha Chipman, jeweller

We always want to create pieces that women and men love to wear – pieces that are of exquisite quality, and designs that can be passed down through generations ...

In Short ...

For something so small, a piece of jewellery can make an incredibly large statement. Obviously size isn’t everything – it’s the smaller details that make a lust-worthy accessory special. Natasha Chipman knows all about designing eye-catching jewellery – you could even say the business is in her blood. As the daughter of acclaimed jewellery designer Marion Schweitzer, Natasha has been exposed to the ins and outs of the industry from an early age. It’s no surprise that Natasha would follow in her mother’s footsteps, and along with her sister Alexandra started Natasha Schweitzer in 2015, designing and crafting covetable jewellery that has since been featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar Australia, Russh, Marie Claire Australia and more. Natasha will be showcasing the brand’s new collection at marie claire Up Late event on Thursday March 30, so we thought it would be a great opportunity to see where Natasha’s inspiration comes from and what makes a piece of jewellery perfect.

Being the child of one of Australia’s first female jewellers, Marion Schweitzer, you must have grown up with a lot of lovely pieces around you. Do you remember the first item of jewellery that you found mesmerising?
My sister Alex and I grew up seeing absolutely beautiful jewellery. My mother’s engagement ring was the first piece that really mesmerised me. The ring has the most incredible deep blue centre stone, and is set in yellow gold – truly unique and unlike anything I have seen – even to this day.

What was the driving force that led you to embark on your own journey as a jewellery designer?
I have always had a creative flare in me, so I suppose I always knew that working in the fashion industry would be my bread and butter. I actually completed a double degree at university before I took the business on full-time. My sister and I have had an incredible work ethic instilled in us from our parents, so we both have worked very hard to get where we are today.

What would you say is the key ethos and design aesthetic behind Natasha Schweitzer?
I think the ethos and aesthetic of our brand are really entwined. We always want to create pieces that women and men love to wear – pieces that are of exquisite quality, and designs that can be passed down through generations.

Talk us through the process of designing a Natasha Schweitzer piece. Where do you find your inspiration?
In honest truth sometimes I have no idea! I have a wonderful imagination and I do have a love for designs that are simplistic yet incredibly detailed. I suppose it starts with what I want to wear and what I believe my clients want and need. I think this is really important.

In terms of ensuring each piece is covetable in its own right, when do you know a design is worth developing into a tangible product?
I never design anything without thinking about my clients. Each piece is made with someone in mind, and I think that that is the most important thing that designers often forget to do. I take things like weight, size and wearability into consideration and will never make earrings that are uncomfortable or too heavy.

You are among some of the great designers making an appearance at marie claire Up Late on James Street on Thursday March 30. Will you be showcasing any new pieces when you pop in to the store that evening?
We will be showing our new SS’17 collection in store for Marie Claire Up Late. The collection just launched this week and we have had such a huge response. Each piece is really versatile, very feminine but edgy at the same time.

Who are some other Australian fashion or jewellery designers that you think are doing great things at the moment?
There are so many Australian’s building incredible brands so I wouldn’t know where to start. I do adore Georgia Alice clothing, (and Georgia herself). She is technically from New Zealand, but that’s close enough for me!

Beyond crafting jewellery, what other passions stoke your creative fire?
Truthfully, I don’t have a lot of spare time on my hands. I would love to do pottery one day and I do love to read books and I write all the time – especially emails! That’s creative right?

You can meet Natasha next Thursday March 30 at marie claire Up Late at the Natasha Schweitzer store from 6–8:00 pm.
