The Weekend Edition - Sleep In. Slow Down. Enjoy.

Trevor Ashley, Fat Swan

Trevor Ashley, Cabaret Diva

Be truthful; people can spot a fake a mile off ...

In Short ...

While many a young girl dreams of becoming a ballerina, the industry can be ripe with elements less than graceful. From rivalry between dancers and sleazy choreographers to controlling stage mums, the realm of ballet is no easy feat. Referencing classic dance films Fame, Centre Stage and Black Swan comes the latest comedic cabaret by Trevor Ashley. An adults-only panto, Fat Swan was inspired by the Black Swan film. While dark and twisty, it's also riddled with cliches, which Trevor saw as an opportunity to create a parody. Adding lesbian experiences, paranoia and psychosis to the line-up, Fat Swan delivers a hilariously cheeky sequin-adorned take on your classic dance drama. The Weekend Edition caught up with Trevor to chat weekends before he dons his tutu and tiara at Brisbane Powerhouse November 14–17. Image by Jody Haines

How do you like to start your weekend?
Usually with brunch somewhere fabulous. Sometimes accompanied by a Bloody Mary. Actually, ALWAYS accompanied by a Bloody Mary.

What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday morning?
Sleep! Mornings aren’t my strong point. Usually I’m recovering from Friday night.

How do you like to unwind?
I enjoy being social, so hanging out with friends in a bar by the sea is the best. I have just realised from answering these questions that I am an alcoholic.

What are your essentials for a well-spent weekend?
I think company and laughs. That’s the best …

What’s something you’ve been meaning to do on the weekend but haven’t got around to yet?
I’ve been meaning to get to Sculptures by the Sea at Bondi, but I think I missed it.

What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday evening?
I like going out to my favourite cafe and just having a nice quiet dinner. On Monday the emails never seem to stop.

What are you looking forward to next weekend?
I’m looking forward to being in Brisbane and entertaining everyone with Fat Swan.

What are you reading at the moment?
Would you believe War and Peace? Nah – Kathy Griffin’s autobiography.

What inspires you?
People being passionate about what they do.

What was your childhood dream?
I’m living it really. Though as a child I wasn’t wearing a dress.

What has been your greatest achievement?
When I sold out the State Theatre this year with my Shirley Bassey show. I saw her there as a teenager, and never thought I’d manage to do that myself.

What is success to you?
If people come to a show and laugh their asses off, then I feel successful.

What are your words of wisdom?
Be truthful; people can spot a fake a mile off.
