Get spooky this school holidays with Metro Art’s Scaredy House

Something is going bump in the night this winter school holidays – Scaredy House by Counterpilot is a fun and immersive theatrical experience that combines Goosebumps and Minecraft with an existential twist that's sure to shiver spines and spark imaginations. Perfect for 8–12 year-olds, this kid-friendly show is premiering at Metro Arts from June 19–29. Read on for all of the hair-raising details…

Screw your courage to the sticking place and get ready to unravel the mysteries of the Scaredy House. Fear not – while deliciously spooky, this theatrical experience is far more likely to tickle funny bones and warm hearts than truly terrify. Counterpilot has been Metro Art’s Company in Residence since 2022 and Scaredy House is the collective’s first theatre work for young people, aiming to challenge, engage and thoroughly entertain audiences,

“We’re building a ‘reverse haunted house’ that will pull apart what it means to be afraid, “says director Nathan Sibthorpe. “We’re interested in fears that don’t belong in ghost stories – those things we’re scared of deep down, like not fitting in, or not knowing who we’re meant to be. But then also what if the house itself felt those feelings?”

As part of the experience, Metro Arts will be hosting a free post-show artist talk following the 6:30 pm performance on Thursday July 27. There, curious theatregoers can hear about how a show is put together and delve deeper into the creative process behind Scaredy House

Creative kiddos who love a spooky tale can keep the good times going with Counterpilot’s school holiday workshops on June 22 and 29. There they can unlock the secrets of theatre magic, learn shadow puppetry and create their own mini ghost stories. A marvellously mystical time for mini makers!

Tickets to Scaredy House and the Scaredy House Workshop are available at Metro Art’s website
