Slow travel through Southern Italy with soul-soothing new retreat, Savour the Slow

Brisbane-based food writer and creator Jacqui Toumbas has launched a new retreat experience that’s coming to the charming coastal town of Puglia this September – and you're invited. Savour the Slow offers a glorious week of culture, cuisine and leisure as you slow travel through the heart of Italy. Allora! Here's what to know ...

In 2023, Jacqui took a transformative trip to the region of Puglia where she mesmerised her audience with scenes of the coastal township. Whilst the area is well-known for its rustic trulli homes, rolling olive groves and beach enclaves, it was the culinary depths and cultural richness that ended up being the most unforgettable – and are usually only experienced through the intimate encounters with people and their land that slow travel affords.

Slow travel is the latest wanderlust philosophy to sweep globetrotters. The approach wants to renew the R&R of your next holiday – saying goodbye to overstuffed itineraries and fleeting city tours. Instead, it calls for an immersion into the people, the culture and the landscape of your destination – all at a leisurely pace.

Jacqui decided to recapture the magic of her trip to Puglia with another excursion this September – and this time, she wants to bring other foodie fiends and leisure lovers along for the ride. The Savour the Slow retreat invites you for seven sensational days living at a Massaria — a luxury farmhouse – amidst olive groves, Mediterranean beaches and plenty of authentic Puglian charm. Each day has been consciously planned to feature a balanced itinerary of slow-paced experiences that capture the soul-enriching spirit of Puglia.

Savour the Slow has taken on the leg work that comes from travel planning – offering a keen eye for beautiful experiences and already-established ties to Puglia. The retreat hosts a curated mix of food and cultural adventures, dedicated to Puglia’s rich heritage. Revel in the likes of cheese making, olive oil tastings, wine discoveries and a hands-on cooking class all led by locals. The day trip to Grottaglie led by cook, food stylist and writer Alice Adams Carosi is a ceramic lover’s dream, immersing you in not only local workshops but the region’s artistic tradition.

Beyond the extracurriculars, guests are afforded plenty of time to soak in the Puglian sun with exclusive beach access and explore the accommodation’s 30-hectare estate of olive groves, vineyards and the fragrant Mediterranean scrubland.

Designed to be intimate, the retreat only offers a few spots with pre-booking already open. Find out more about this heavenly holiday via the Savour the Slow website.
