Roma Street scores new heritage-inspired boozer Mr Luxford’s

Brisbane City’s Roma Street strip is steeped in history dating back to the city’s earliest periods, but despite its heritage Roma Street’s contemporary hospitality scene is yet to flourish on a level comparable to the CBD’s other major promenades. Mr Luxford’s is a brand-new boozer looking to add another option for Roma Street workers, taking inspiration from the area’s history and pairing it with a concise offering of cocktails, Asian-inspired eats and casual vibes.

Mr Sydney Luxford was an important figure in the early days of Brisbane’s culinary scene. A popular vegetable vendor and local legend, Mr Luxford operated the Roma Street Markets in the early 1900s before relocating them to their longstanding home in Rocklea. This larger-than-life personality and his love of food is the inspiration for the new Roma Street bar and eatery that shares his namesake located a short distance from the parklands and courts. Mr Luxford’s is looking to add a spark to the Brisbane City’s fringe, providing everything from quick-service snacks and coffee to sit-down feasts and sundowners. The 60-seat venue’s aesthetic pays homage to The City’s early period, with black-and-white photos of Roma Street and its surrounds meshing with decorative elements that evoke a heritage feel.

The morning starts with Grinders Coffee and breakfast bites such as tofu scramble, bacon-and-egg rolls, avocado bagels and mushroom and brie omelettes. Come the afternoon, the menu pivots to showcase an Asian-inspired array of eats. We’re talking seaweed and daikon salad, coconut and lemongrass chicken, slow-braised Mongolian lamb sliders, Kung Pao prawn baos, and ginger and soy seared-salmon poke bowls. Come the evening, Mr Luxford’s bar snacks and mains come into play, including Thai beef skewers, Szechuan lamb ribs, sticky orange pork belly and Korean-style barbecue wings. Mr Luxford’s cocktail list boasts more than 20 intriguing concoctions to sample, alongside tap beers and cider, wines and non-alcoholic beverages.

Mr Luxford’s is now open. Head to the Stumble Guide for more information.
