The round-up: apartment space-saving hacks

If you’re about to move into a new apartment, or feeling your current one needs a new-year makeover, we’ve come up with the best apartment space-saving hacks to maximise storage.

Living room
While your lounge is usually the centrepiece to your living area, it can also take up the most space. While sofa beds offer an extra sleeping area for friends to crash overnight, they don’t offer much more. The best option is a lounge with storage that also converts to a bed. The King Furniture Delta Storage suite is the epitome of quality, but if you’re not quite ready to splash out the big bucks, the Fantastic Furniture Metro Chase with Storage is a steal.

If you’re not ready to part with your much-loved sofa, the next option is to buy some storage pods. The chic Stephanie Storage Ottoman by Brosa adds a touch of decadence to your home. Available in small or large, the ottoman is also on castors to easily move around.

Bedroom
While stashing odds and ends under your bed seems like the good option, it will get on your nerves if you’re slightly OCD. The solution is a gas-lift storage bed so you can store away all your winter clothes and any big items that take up too much space. The Metropolis Bed by Forty Winks not only has a gas-lift base, but also storage in the bedhead plus a shelf for your favourite book. If you’re on a budget, you can’t go past IKEA’s Malm Ottoman Bed.

Bathroom
Small trolleys on castors can work a treat in bathrooms and ensuites, but one of the most exciting inventions in the past few years is suction storage. It’s a renter’s dream since drilling a few holes still isn’t kosher with landlords. Howards Storage World has everything you can think of for clever suction storage solutions, from holders for your hair straightener and hair dryer to extra towel rails and shelves.

Empty corners
Every apartment has one or two of these, and while you can stick a pot plant in empty corners, you may as well put them to better use. The Ikea PS Corner Cabinet, in warm pink or white, is not only adorably chic, it’s a bargain too. The corner bookshelf from Milan Direct with five shelves will also give you a host of extra space for your knick-knacks and books, and maybe that pot plant after all.
