Central Station set to be modernised with some cutting-edge upgrades

One of Brisbane’s largest transport hubs will soon boast some shiny new fixtures as a series of redevelopment works get under way this month. Central Station’s upgrades will result in a complete modernisation of the facade and platforms to cater for the increasing growth of Brisbane’s population.

If you’ve ever experienced Central Station at peak hour, then you’d agree that it is undoubtedly one of the busiest stations in Brisbane. The stats back it up – more than 140, 000 travellers arrive and depart from Central Station each weekday, which is a mind-boggling amount. Queensland Rail is commencing work on a series of upgrades to Central Station to help cater for the increasing number of commuters passing through the station while also bringing the aesthetics in line with Brisbane’s increasingly modern cityscape.

In conjunction with PDT Architects, Queensland Rail will be staging works over weekends and nights starting this month. The upgrade will include the addition of a new roof over the Edward Street end of the concourse, new ceilings, wall and floor treatments and new coverings for the platforms, additional escalators from the concourse to ANZAC Square, new lifts and a refurbishment of back of house facilities. Work is commencing this month on the back of house refurbishments, while the platform works are due to commence in early 2017.
