Believe it – Cher to headline the 40th anniversary Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Party

If we could turn back time, we would have loved to be present for the very first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in 1978. In its 40-year history the rainbow celebration of all things LBGTQI has hosted an array of incredible acts and activists, including George Michael, Village People, Cyndi Lauper and Kylie Minogue, so it makes sense that it's 40th anniversary party be headlined by a true gay icon. Are you strong enough to handle this? You better believe it, the rumours are true – performing this year's Mardi Gras Party is the mononymous queen herself, Cher.

That’s right. Mother. Flippin’. CHER. To say we are excited is a vast understatement. Rumours have been circling that the goddess of pop might be headlining this year’s event, and given our country’s very significant progression recently (yay marriage equality!) it’s no surprise that this year’s Mardi Gras sold out in record time at the end of last year. But don’t fret! Mardi Gras organisers have today announced an increased capacity for the party on Saturday March 3, adding the iconic Dome venue, additional eateries and outside areas.

A limited number of newly release tickets to the Mardi Gras Party will be available to existing members from 10:00 am AEDT on Monday January 15, with the final release of tickets for the general public on sale at 10:00 am AEDT on Wednesday January 15 from the Mardi Gras website. Cher’s exclusive Australian performance isn’t the only drawcard to the multi-venue multi-sensory experience – this year’s party will host an all-star Mardi Gras royalty line-up from the past 40 years. If you can’t make it down to Sydney, SBS has got you, babe. Cher will be featured in the official 2018 Mardi Gras Parade television broadcast on Sunday March 4, and you can catch the full live stream on Sunday March 3 from 7:00 pm on SBS On Demand.
