Outdoor cinemas, glittery performances and spectacular light shows – the festive Christmas events taking over Brisbane

The weather is warming up, advent calendars are lining the shelves at your local grocery store and the familiar melismatic singing style of Mariah Carey has begun to fill the air – Christmas is coming up quicker than Rudolph can run! December in Brisbane is the most magical time of year for good reason, as The City lights up with vibrant light displays, wholesome carolling sessions and even appearances from Kris Kringle himself. So you can get in the festive spirit, we have rounded up the top things happening during Christmas in Brisbane.

The City – November 26 to December 24
Yuletide fun, shopping sprees and spectacular light shows – we are more than just a little bit excited for the festive season to kick off in The City. You could say it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Brisbane when the towering 22-metre-tall tree in King George Square is finally illuminated on Friday November 26. Fancy staying in? You’ll also be able to witness the magical moment when the twinkling lights are switched on via a live stream that can be enjoyed from the comforts of your couch. The Christmas vibes continue with joyous sing-alongs at the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols, which will see some of Australia’s finest singers and entertainers ignite Riverstage. This year’s show is promising to be better than ever and fun for the young and young at heart, so be sure to snap up your tickets! Remember to keep your eyes to the sky when you’re walking around The City – many of Brisbane’s striking heritage buildings will be illuminated with festive light shows throughout the season. You can also catch the ever-popular The Lott by Golden Casket City Hall Lights when they return to City Hall with an enchanting display of fantasy and magic. Enjoy shopping with a side of entertainment? Immerse yourself in merry magic on Queen Street Mall with Christmas on Queen, a series of daily pop-up performances and roaming entertainment throughout the mall.

South Bank – December 18–23
The abundance of festive dining destinations, a sea of glittering lights weaving through The Parklands and excitement in the air – Christmas at South Bank is nothing short of magical. Kids will go nuts over Santa’s Stop Over, where little ones will have the opportunity to get a photograph with Santa and Mrs Claus as the pair spread Christmas cheer through the lush green surrounds of South Bank. Looking for more ways to keep your little ones entertained this Christmas? Kids Craft and Storytelling is taking over Flowstate at South Bank to make sure your kids are kept thoroughly busy. Santa’s elves will be on hand to recite their favourite storybook tales and craft-loving kids will be able to create their very own take-home Christmas koala instrument. For a family affair, pack some nibbles and pull up a picnic rug at River Quay Green – Christmas Cinema has returned so you can watch some of your favourite festive movie titles (for free!) as the sun sets over the Brisbane skyline. This year also sees The South Bank Christmas Show deliver triple-threat acts to South Bank Piazza. This spellbinding show is guaranteed to get you ready for the most wonderful time of the year. More musical goodness awaits at Festive Beats, which will see an array of top-notch local artists serenade guests with original tunes and cheerful Christmas covers on the River Quay Green and Little Stanley Street Lawns.

Please observe social distancing and COVID-Safe practices at all times when attending Christmas in Brisbane events. Stay at home if you are feeling unwell, wash your hands regularly and download and use the Check In Queensland app.
