Film fanatics and cinephiles assemble! The city’s very own film festival is here this month with a fantastic line-up of Australian and international films to see, and a fun-filled program of panels and special events. Read on to see what’s on the big screen from April 17 to 28.


Walk the red carpet with the stars on the opening night of the festival at HOTA on Wednesday April 17, and celebrate the Queensland Premiere of The Way, My WayThis moving film based on a memoir stars actor Chris Haywood (Sleeping Beauty, Muriel’s Wedding, Wolf Creek) and explores an Australian man’s transformative journey walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Stay for the after-party to chat about the film and connect with the industry.

The Women in Film Lunch on Friday April 19 is sure to be an inspiring afternoon of in-depth conversations with women in the film industry. Attendees will gain insight ab0out all things film from key note speakers Lynne Benzie (president at Village Roadshow), Tracey Vieira (chief content officer at Hoodlum) and Veronica Fury (principal and executive producer at Wildbear Entertainment). After a sell-out event last year, Women in Film Lunch is set to be a crowd favourite, so book your spot now through the HOTA website.

Queensland’s version of the Oscars aka the Screen Industry Gala Awards will take place at the very heart of Australian filmmaking, Warner Bros. Movie World, on Thursday April 18. With flavoursome fare, flowing drinks and live entertainment, this enchanting evening is a chance to network and connect with industry representatives and filmmakers. 

Festival regulars will be pleased to know that the festival’s fan-favourite SIPFest (Shorts in Paradise) is back in 2024 and will be taking over HOTA’s Outdoor Stage. Showcasing 15 of the best short films from around the world, the competition culminates in the live announcement and presentation of the SIPFest award categories and gives audiences the opportunity to vote for their favourites on the night. 

To finish off the movie marathon there will be the Queensland premiere and red carpet gala on Sunday April 28 for the must-see drama, Bleeding Love, which sees Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting, Star Wars) and his real-life daughter Clara McGregor (American Horror Story, Christopher Robin) play father and daughter. The film follows the two on a road trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the two try to reconcile their relationship along the way.
