Escape to the country for a weekend of wagon rides, bush dancing and equine arts at the Scenic Rim Clydesdale Spectacular

If you’re craving some country air and flair this winter, a weekend amidst the rolling green fields of the Scenic Rim might be just what you need. On June 15–16, the heart of the region will erupt in celebration of the annual Scenic Rim Clydesdale Spectacular, as equine enthusiasts flock to Boonah and celebrate the beautiful breed with a host of events. We’ve rounded up the best of what’s on offer across the two days – plus all of the delights of Boonah you won’t want to miss.

Trot through the festivities with a horse-drawn wagon ride
The Scenic Rim Clydesdale Spectacular is a celebration of the region’s traditions and there’s no better way to experience the history of Boonah than a horse-drawn wagon. Pulled by three beautiful Clydesdales, take a tour around the town and discover the region’s local history.  Experience all of the wonders of Boonah to the comforting clop of heavy horse feet with wagon rides held all week in the lead-up to the event.

Celebrate Scenic Rim Eat Local Month with Clydesdales shindig
Scenic Rim Eat Local Month is teaming up with the Spectacular for A Winter Warmer with the Clydesdales at Olive View Estate. Feast among the estate’s 700 olive trees on Chef Pepe’s signature Spanish paella, mouth-watering and locally sourced roast pork and Scottish desserts. Take a frolic through Olive View’s green pastures, pet the Clydies and bush dance with locals at this one-of-a-kind event. This event is sold out, but you can email the Clydesdale Spectacular team to be put on the waitlist!

Be wowed by the awe-inspiring equine acts of Australian horseman Guy McLean
Famed Australian horseman, entertainer and bush poet Guy McLean is best known for wowing audiences with his annual show at the Ekka. This June, Guy and his herd of horses are heading to Scenic Rim for a showstopping performance at the Clydesdale Spectacular. Described as a horse whisperer, Guy’s remarkable relationship with his horses makes for an incredible show – not to be missed by thrill seekers and horse lovers alike.

Spend an evening with an artist
Internationally acclaimed sculptor Andy Scott – celebrated for his equine sculptures – will be a guest of honour at this year’s Clydesdale Spectacular. The artist created the world-renowned The Kelpies in Falkirk, Scotland, as well as Boonah’s landmark metal statue, Clydebuilt, which stands proudly in the centre of town. On Wednesday June 12, you can spend An Evening with Andy Scott – an exclusive chance to meet and speak with Andy whilst enjoying local Scenic Rim food and wine.

Watch Australia and the USA battle it out on the bark
With the American lumberjack Scott Hyde in attendance this year, this year’s axe-throwing and log-rolling competitions will be headlined by an international showdown. The visiting timber-sports specialist will be taking part in the first-ever Australia versus the USA tournament. Witness the Clydesdale Spectacular crown a winner and then catch Scott sharing his knowledge on arborism and conservation in a fascinating showcase.

Feast on a delectable pie from The Boonah Pie Cart
If no trip to the country is complete without some deliciously wholesome old-fashioned fare – fear not. The Boonah Pie Cart will be rolling throughout The Boonah Showgrounds, serving up its scrumptious pies from haggis to beef and lamb. The charmingly rustic cart was handcrafted by Rick Stanfield, who you can catch showcasing the rare art of wheelwrighting on both days.

Explore Boonah’s range of local gems
With the Scenic Rim being home to a leading array of farmers and makers, you’ll find a slew of exceptional restaurants and cafes throughout the town if you decide to make a weekend of it. On Church Street, Blume Restaurant – an intimate 20-person eatery – is serving up an award-winning menu of fine-dining dishes and local flavours. For a slice of casual comfort, The Bowl – the restaurant of Boonah Bowls Club – is known for putting a local spin on pub favourites. Take a stroll on Boonah’s high street and disconnect from the city with the quintessential country-town experience.

Luxuriate at one of the region’s cosy accommodations
Nestled in and around Boonah’s lush bushlands and rolling fields is a sought-after fleet of cabins and luxury accomodation. The Old Church Bed and Breakfast boasts old-fashion country hospitality, with lush amenities and continental breakfast each morning. For a luxe evening under the stars, look no further than Ketchup’s Bank Glamping. Set on the edge of 100 acres of private eucalyptus forest, this bush retreat boasts breathtaking mountain views and idyllic sunsets.
