Winter has finally come and fortunately, the calendar is packed with exciting events to keep your hibernation impulse at bay. Rug up in your winter warmers and rejoice – food festivals, ballet performances and indie music galore are coming to town. Here are the eight events you won’t want to miss in June across Brisbane and its surrounds …


Dopamine Land, now open
After enchanting audiences of London with its sensory feast, Dopamine Land is coming to Brisbane. Described as an interactive museum, Dopamine Land gains its name from the happiness hormone the installations trigger. From May 29, the phenomenon is coming to Uptown and includes ten-themed rooms offering mesmerising optical illusions and spectacular soundscapes and more. Find out more here.

Scenic Rim Eat Local Month, all month
The month-long celebration returns – beckoning city-slickers and country locals to experience the paddock-to-plate bliss. The region’s best producers, growers and flavour makers are uniting for an extensive program of long lunches, leisurely farm tours, family-friendly events and must-attend festivals. Fall in love with the flavours of the Scenic Rim across four jam-packed weeks of events. Find out more here.

Open Season, all month
With a sizzling line-up of indie acts, Open Season is bringing a fleet of local legends, national treasures and international heavyweights to Brisbane all winter long. This month sees the festivities kick off with Blak Day Out  – an all-ages street party celebrating First Nations excellence on Saturday June 1. Sky Ferreira, Yves Tumor, The Paper Kites and plenty more acts also have gigs slated for June as part of the festival. Find out more here.

Underground Festival, June 6–8
Dive below the surface at HOTA’s groundbreaking UNDERGROUND Festival. The spiritual sibling to Dark MOFO and OHM Festival, UNDERGROUND is bringing interesting new ideas and experimental works to HOTA. The three-night festival features the likes of ethereal-electronic art installations, basement parties inspired by Berlin bohemia, unpredictable life-drawing experiences and so much more. This year’s roster will take event-goers on an entertaining and educational ride.

Queensland Ballet Coppelia, June 7–22
Coppelia represents one of the Romantic era’s most celebrated pieces of comic ballet. This month, Queensland Ballet takes on the show’s collision of love and mayhem with a healthy dose of Australian flair. With the story relocated to the sun-drenched South Australian town of Hahndorf, the ballet follows a beautiful, life-size doll and two young lovers in a performance of comic chaos. The beloved ballet is being brought to life with the music of Leo Delibes from June 7–22 at QPAC. Find out more here

Disney on Ice, June 27–30
June is home to the winter school holidays and thankfully, Mickey and the gang are making their way back to Brisbane for the annual Disney on Ice show. Hosted by Brisbane Entertainment Centre, catch all your favourite Disney characters from Frozen, Toy Story 4 and Aladdin take over the ice across four mesmerising nights. Experience the music and magic of Disney on Ice this month.

Urzila Carlson, June 21 
Urzila Carlson has remained a leading name in Australian comedy for over a decade, delighting audiences with her raw takes and famous Kiwi-South-African twang. Throughout June, Urzila will be bringing her side-splitting stand-up to Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Fresh off the back of a sold-out UK tour and another win at Melbourne Comedy Festival, Urzila’s new show is set to be a riot of laughs.

The Great Artist Market, June 29
After a knockout autumn event, The Great Artist Market is back to take over Felons Brewing Co. on Saturday June 29. The market series lives up to its namesake – featuring more than 50 stalls by the best creatives of Brisbane from illustrators to jewellery makers and ceramists. You’ll also find free face painting, balloon twisting and baked goods on offer whilst you shop, along with a live DJ to score your Saturday morning.
