Australian art icon Lindy Lee AO is coming to The Calile Hotel in new partnership with the National Gallery of Australia

It looks like you won’t have to take a trip to Canberra to experience the National Gallery of Australia's (NGA) revered collection of art and events. Artist Lindy Lee AO is coming to Brisbane this month for an evening at The Calile Hotel, marking the start of its exciting new partnership with the NGA. This new collaboration is set to bring Brisbane unprecedented access to internationally renowned artists – beyond the traditional gallery walls. Here’s what you need to know …

Calile Culture – the luxury hotel’s event series for leisure and learning – has already seen an exciting cohort of celebrated artists and creatives visit Brisbane last year, such as author Trent Dalton and playwright Suzie Miller. This week the hotel launched its latest collaboration with the NGA, set to bring to Brisbane a few of the internationally regarded artists and artworks the country’s national arts institution welcomes regularly.

“By showcasing artists from the national collection outside our walls, we make this cultural treasure accessible to all,” says NGA director Nick Mitzevich. The partnership lets the gallery extend its reach beyond Canberra and enrich Brisbane with its program of artistic perspectives.

The collaboration between the two award-winning Australian landmarks kicks off Tuesday March 26 with an appearance from Lindy Lee AO. The tour de force artist has been representing Australian art on the world stage for decades with multiple international shows. Lindy will join Urban Art Projects (UAP) founder and managing director Matt Tobin and NGA Head of Australian Art Deborah Hart to discuss the upcoming reveal of her new work – Ouroboros

Through Ouroboros, Lindy has continued to find inspiration in her Australian-Chinese heritage, depicting the ancient image of a snake eating its tail – a symbol of eternal return and the cycles of birth, death, and renewal. The installation was commissioned by the NGA to celebrate the institution’s 40th anniversary and will be located at the building’s entrance. Gallery-goers will enter the precinct via the sculpture’s mouth – making Ouroboros a visitor’s first introduction to the world of Aussie art when attending the NGA.

Brisbane’s art community gets the rare opportunity to hear from the artist herself before the work gets unveiled this October and discover the journey of Ouroboros from conception to creation.

Tickets for Lindy Lee – A Local Prelude to A National Unveiling are free and can be secured here
