PUBLIC LECTURE: FULFILLING THE AUDIENCE’S EXPECTATIONS AND WORKING WITHIN GENRE

Modern audiences are savvy when it comes to their moviegoing. They have certain preconceived notions about the movies they have decided to see and the filmmaking team often has to bear this in mind. To what degree do composers have to play to the audience’s expectations? When do we stick comfortably to a certain genre of score and when can we break the mould and play against type?

Respected Hollywood composer and orchestrator, Cameron Patrick, returns to Griffith University once again to share his first-hand insight on how the film composer settles on an approach and to what degree they can break the mould while keeping the audience’s expectations in mind. Drawing examples from some of cinemas most significant moments, as well as demonstrating the scoring process live with a full musical ensemble from Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, Patrick breaks down the mysteries of satisfying audiences and composing for film.

Cameron Patrick has had first-hand experience in the film and entertainment industry for over two decades as a musician, composer and orchestrator. His credits include major motion pictures such as Pixar’s Coco, Spiderman: Homecoming, Zootopia and Star Trek Into Darkness.

This is a unique opportunity to experience one of the world’s most talented composers and orchestrators in action. Limited tickets available.
