Opera Queensland is bringing the wonder of song and story to its 2024 program, with an inspiring line-up of performances that are sure to nourish all of your senses. Whether it be a bel canto festival paired with a carefully curated meal by Maggie Beer, a circus, opera collaboration or a Torres Strait-born world-premiere musical, Queensland is shaping up to be the place to be for opera in 2024. Kicking off the year is a brand-new festival dedicated to the ever-popular repertoire of Italian opera from the mid-19th century is taking over Brisbane in April 2024. Brisbane Bel Canto will see Australian-first performances from superstar soprano Jessica Pratt alongside maestro Richard Mills and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, a long lunch with Maggie Beer and a 60-voice student chorus perform Gioachino Rossini poignant masterpiece ‘Stabat Mater’. Then in May, join music lovers from all over Australia (and the world) on the ultimate outback road trip and enjoy songs under uninterrupted skies at Festival of Outback Opera. This one-of-a-kind program allows you to choose-your-own-music-inspired adventure taking you to outdoor concerts with breathtaking sunsets, frocking up for a gala or casual pub singalongs. A timeless tale of love and tragedy with a contemporary twist will take over QPAC’s Playhouse Theatre in July, when Opera Queensland partner up with Circa for Dido and Aeneas. Leo season is where things will start seriously heating up with the world-premier performance of Straight from the Strait. Paying homage to the stories of a group of remarkable Torres Straight Islander railway construction workers, this heartwarming musical highlights the true power of song. Returning in 2024 is the Opera Queensland Studio Series, offering audiences the opportunity to experience big and bold voices in the intimate setting of the Opera Queensland studio. This year’s Studio Series features six performances in a mix of genres – everything from comedy operas to beautiful arias – happening all throughout the year.
