What’s That? Fantastic Planet at Portside Wharf

Elsewhere

If you’re a fan of gigantic art installations, picturesque riverside locations and delicious dining, you’re in luck – because a world-famous large-scale piece of art is popping up at Portside Wharf!

What’s That? is part of a large-scale inflatable art installation from Australian artist Amanda Parer titled Fantastic Planet, which is made up of a family of giant inflatable luminous white ‘humanoids’ who land at different sites across the globe.

The five metre-tall figure will crouch down over the wharf, peering at those passing by – making for a sensational photo opp that will pop off on your Insta feed.

Amanda’s inspiration for the piece comes from the 1973 Czech/French film Fantastic Planet (La Planète Sauvage), a dystopian tale featuring gargantuan humanoids that have overrun a human race gone feral. Her intention – apart from creating an eye-popping piece of art – is for observers to feel the weight of being a vulnerable species.

While you’re in the area, it’s the perfect opportunity to make a day (or night) of it by booking in to dine at one of Portside’s many marvellous eateries. From grab-and-go treats that you can take to the exhibit right through to fancy waterfront feasts with the illuminated installation glowing in the background, there is something to suit every comer.

What’s That? will be available to view at Portside Wharf for free from August 31 to September 26 – so be sure to swing by the precinct to see this world-famous piece of art before it jets off to its next destination.
