Try oyster ice-cream and other wild flavours at this free pop-up ice-cream parlour

An ice-cream van serving free scoops is rolling into Queen Street this Friday and Saturday, taking taste buds on a wild adventure to places they have (most probably) never been before. With flavours ranging from lemony oyster to sweet garlic and meat-infused charcuterie, it’s safe to say this pop-up ice-cream parlour is far from your regular scoop-slinger. But rest assured, there’s a method to the madness.

Apollo Motorhomes and Qantas Frequent Flyer are behind this one-of-a-kind ice-cream pop-up, which aims to shine a spotlight on some of Australia’s most iconic regional foods and flavours. Parking up in Queen Street Mall (outside the entrance to Uptown) on March 8–9 only, the van will be scooping a wacky and intriguing menu of ice-cream flavours (all for free!), which have been expertly created with ingredients that can only be found on a regional Australian road trip. Every flavour is designed to take a different route around the country, so the idea here is that these unique flavour combinations will inspire the eater to gather their pals, hire a van and take their taste buds around regional Australia.

Now, for the menu. Black garlic from Western Australia has been flown in to create the Margaret River Honey Garlic ice-cream, which will offer an in-your-face sweet-garlic hit with every lick. Truffles and hot chilli from Hot Chilli Mumma on the Great Ocean Road are being used in the punchy Ottway Ranges Chilli and Truffle Sorbet, and an assortment of meat from the Hungerford Meat Co. will be combined with pretzels and figs to create the Hunter Valley Charcuterie Crunch. Yes, you read that right – charcuterie ice-cream.

For a taste of rural Queensland, Stretch Family Farms provided its fresh ginger, turmeric and lime, which have been churned into the zesty Beerwah Ginger Gelato. Last, but most certainly not least, iconic Bruny Island fresh oysters from Tasmanian Oyster Co. are being used to create the one-of-a-kind Bruny Island Oyster Lemon Zest ice-cream, which organisers say is a delicate combination of sweet and salty.

The ice-cream van will be serving free scoops outside the Uptown entrance in Queen Street Mall from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm on Friday and 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday. Like what you lick? Take your taste buds on a trip around Australia – or better yet, win a trip here.
