Any cafe that is conscious of dietary inclusivity scores a big tick in our book, so it’s always worth celebrating when a new arrival hits the scene. New Farm’s Ginger & Rose is a great spot for easing into a plant-based change, with a menu that has been specifically designed to deliver familiar tastes with a healthier lean.


The plant-based dining movement is in full swing, and the biggest winner from this change is our tastebuds. New Farm scored a new intolerance-friendly cafe in the form of Ginger & Rose this week, a sunny eatery situated near the corner of Merthyr Road and James Street. The dynamic duo behind the concept is the mother-and-daughter combo of Tracy and Brittany Humphreys, who have pooled their collective hospitality experience and struck out on their own. After searching for a venue that suited their tastes, their cafe dream gained legs when they were shown the space that once houses Escobar. The space had been stripped bare, giving the tandem the perfect canvas to start from scratch. After a crisp and minimal makeover, Ginger & Rose opened for business on Wednesday June 6, delivering Tracy and Brittany’s vision of a wholesome cafe that offered menu of recognisable faves made healthier, with a focus on seasonality and flavour.

When it comes to grub, Tracy and Brittany’s core ethos was to make its menu accessible to everyone. The debut menu offers a host of familiar dishes that have been flipped to become intolerance friendly. Dishes are made in house and are predominantly-plant based, with vegan and dairy-free options comprising the majority of the menu – even the specials, cakes and sweets. Diners are given the option of adding meat and cheese where applicable, starting with breakfast options that include waffles with maple syrup and whipped coconut cream, savoury baked beans, chickpea patty breakfast burgers and potato rostis. Upstart Toowoomba roaster Spectacled Bear has been enlisted as Ginger & Rose’s coffee of choice, with all milk substitutes available. As the morning shifts into the afternoon, Ginger & Rose begins its lunch service, offering a range of similarly plant-based starters and mains. Feast-worthy options include chilli-lime corn cobs, air-fried sweet potato chips, black bean nachos, Moroccan chickpea tagines and satay open grills, while a cabinet is packed with fresh sweets, salads and sandwiches to munch on the move.
