Fortitude Valley live-music institution The Zoo to close its doors

After 32 years of entertaining Brisbane music fans, The Zoo has announced it will be closing its doors on July 8 along with its sister spot Stranded Bar on May 8. The closures come in response to the rising operational costs for music venues.

Nestled in the historic Shannon’s building, The Zoo has long been a go-to gig institution for Brisbane, beckoning generations of music fans to its grungy second-floor space. The site has hosted countless internationally renowned acts and special events over the years and bolstered the careers of countless local and independent artists.

The Zoo took to Instagram Thursday May 1 to share the news. “Sadly, the financial reality of keeping music venues afloat in 2024 is all too stark. The Zoo reached its highest ticket sales in its 32-year history last year, yet this was still not enough to combat rising operational costs, and decreasing returns.”

The venue has extended its thanks to Brisbane music lovers for decades of dancing, singing and moshing. “We hope you’ll join us for one last dance over the next few months. We want to make the last shows very special and will be looking to add extra shows while we can!”

If you purchased tickets at the venue outside the closure dates – The Zoo will be getting in contact. Follow The Zoo on socials to stay up to date on its final events and shows.
