As previously mentioned, the Mad Wax capsule collection is a direct visual ode to the eponymous surf film that captured a generation. Released in 1987, Mad Wax celebrated the unique style that was coming about in the era – boards got shorter, tricks got more complicated, surf culture was spreading across the globe and the scene was blossoming. The Michael Hohensee directed short film starred champion surfer Ross Clarke Jones in the lead alongside Tom Carroll and Gary Elkerton, all set to a killer soundtrack by Aussie rockers GANGgajang. The production also marked a turning point for surf to become a fashion statement as much as a sport.
When it comes to the visual aspect of the Mad Wax capsule collection, you can expect some serious nostalgia pangs. From the purple-centric colour palette to the lashings of plaid, every design detail is a nod to the era in which Mad Wax reigned supreme. The look has been curated by Quiksilver’s team based on the original apparel that appeared in the film, as well as drawing upon designs from the Quiksilver catalogue at the time of its release. Longsleeves with the OG Quiksilver branding, oversized sweaters, cord shorts and retro prints all feature.
