The announcement that Brisbane would be getting its own micro-winery caused a stir of excitement in the vino-loving community. After months of patience, Gerler Wines unveiled City Winery on Wandoo Street in Fortitude Valley. The inner-city winery took over the space previously occupied by Campos behind James Street Markets, and features a barrel room, winery, a 70-seater restaurant, a 20-seater private dining room and cellar. City Winery promises to be an experience destination or ‘wine playground’, where visitors will have a hands-on wine education experience, viewing the process, stomping on grapes, assisting with bottling and more. Head chef Travis Crane has created a uniquely Australian menu that matches each of the wines in Gerler’s selection, centred around an open fire pit. Although the menu will be ever changing, diners can expect sumptuous morsels similar to grilled red claw with tarragon and roast-garlic butter, organic mallow sheep with sheep strudel and smoked beetroot, and braised pork tail with pork scratchings, noodles and broth. City Winery’s cellar door and restaurant is amply stocked with Gerler’s full range of minimal-intervention drops, crafted to perfectly complement Queensland’s climate and produce.
