We’d love to start with career beginnings – what inspired your love for jewellery design and encouraged you to embark on a career crafting wearable pieces?
I have always had a passion for jewellery. I started as collector of vintage runway and antique pieces. A lot of my spare time was spent researching and sourcing – over time it became more than just a hobby.
Where do you typically draw influence for your pieces when embarking on the design process?
I’m inspired by contemporary art, architecture, design, film and antiquities.
Your boutique on Edward Street is stunning – can you share any details as to what informed its interior design and decorative aesthetic?
I worked with friends and architects Richards and Spence to create my studio and showroom. It was important to create a space that has European sensibilities. I wanted to create a space that was immersive – a little oasis in the middle of the city. From the street you enter through a narrow door into a glistening treasure trove.
What was it about Brisbane City that encouraged you to open your retail space in the area as opposed to other popular shopping precincts?
I fell in love with the former shipping warehouse known as the R.Martin and Co. building on Edward Street. It was constructed in the 1800s and the heritage was ideal or my showroom – the building in itself is a jewel.
You’ve no doubt spent a lot of time in The City – what would you say are some of the area’s best hidden gems?
I spend a lot of time in the Botanical Gardens with my daughter, Ariadne. You couldn’t find a more perfect place to chase after a toddler. A visit to our neighbour Maison Fleur is always a beautiful experience, too – we love to watch the beautiful flowers come and go from their studio. Also a coffee at Spencer makes you feel as though you could be in the cute laneways reminiscent of Melbourne.
Tell us about what you’re working on now! Do you have any new collections on the horizon or covetable pieces that have recently been added to your range?
I have just launched the CRUISE 22 Collection ‘Lido’ which is inspired by summers’ spent by the sea and I am also very busy working on next year’s collection. In addition, I’m preparing to open my new store on William Street in Paddington, Sydney!
Your pieces are coveted the world over, with many well-known style queens adorning your jewels. What has been the most ‘pinch-me’ moment for you in your journey so far?
I have ‘pinch me’ moments all the time – I feel incredibly privileged and to see women wearing my designs gives me great satisfaction.
Finally, what advice would you give to a young creative looking to try their hand at jewellery making?
Perseverance!
